The United Nations has set 2015 as the target year for achieving universal access to family planning and reproductive health services, but if that target is to be reached the U.S. and other donor nations need to boost their financial support. The U.S., for its part, needs to increase its annual commitment to $1 billion. We’re not there yet. This year, the U.S. is spending only $715 million. If you think family planning and reproductive health care is essential to the health and wellbeing of being women and their families in the developing world, it’s time to let your Representatives in Congress know how you feel. The United Nations estimates that there are 215 million women in the development world who want to avoid a pregnancy, but who are not currently using a modern method of birth control. The reasons for this vary, but in some developing countries, women have to travel long distances to obtain family planning services, and when the clinic may be out of contraceptives supplies. Population Action International, with the support of the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition, last year produced a powerful and compelling video in Uganda that puts a very human face on this very serious problem. People living in an industrialized country, like the United States, have a much larger EF than people living in the developed world. That’s because we consume on average a lot more of the world’s resources. The Global Footprint Network has developed a tool that allows you to measure your own footprint. FY 2011 Budget Compromise Cuts US International Family Planning by 5%

April 20, 2011

The Congressional budget compromise approved earlier this month appropriates a total of $615 million for international family planning and reproductive health programs for current fiscal year (FY2011). Of that amount, $575 million is set aside for bilateral assistance; $40 million will be contributed to the United Nations Population Fund. The $615 million figure represents a 5% reduction from the FY2010 appropriation level ($648 million). Read More »


Leading Activist Gloria Feldt Joins the "Million for a Billion" Petition Drive

On the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day, Gloria Feldt, a leading feminist and former President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, lent her support to the "Million for a Billion" petition drive. The U.S. Congress took final action today on a temporary funding measure that would fund the federal government through March 4, 2011. The stop gap funding measure was passed after the Senate failed to approve a House-passed omnibus appropriation bill that would have boosted U.S. international family planning assistance in 2011 to $710 million, an increase of $62 million above the 2010 funding level ($648 million).
